Watch a nuclear flame bubble initiate a type Ia supernova event in a white dwarf star.
Physicists at the Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago have used the IBM Blue Gene/P supercomputer to model and visualise the extreme physics and multi-billion degree temperatures of a supernova explosion.
The explosion itself is over in less than 5 seconds but the supercomputer will use more than 160,000 processors and expend 22 million computational hours simulating the blast.
